Foster Care Books

Below is a copy of the book that my wife (Brandi and I) wrote back in 2020 about our experience with the Illinois DCFS Foster Care System, the local school district and the mental health community of the St Louis Metro Area.

While almost everyone dreams of having children, anyone who has
children can tell you that raising children, while rewarding, is not
easy. There are many ups and downs. Your world starts to revolve
around taking your children to sports or after school activities. You
are no longer just you, but someone’s mom. Most people will
probably better know you as someone’s mom or dad than by your
actual name.

Now imagine that you are a parent, but instead of preparing for your
child for nine months and raising them with your own values and
morals, you decide to raise a child who comes to you at any age 0-17.
These children have experienced significant trauma. They desperately
want love but have learned not to trust. You do not have nine months
to prepare, but maybe two hours.

This is our journey of becoming foster parents. Join us on our
journey as we raise four children with significant needs. In this book
we will not only share our joys and struggles, but also the tip and
tricks that really worked for us. In a way this book is a what to expect
when you’re expecting, but for foster parents.
